Roger Federer Wins Again – Grand Slam 16

Despite the valiant effort UK Tennis Star Andy Murray made to win a grand slam final for Britain, he wasn’t able to measure up the calibre of play that Roger Federer brought in this year’s Australian Open. Federer blazed to an easy victory over Murray in three straight sets. Federer was in fine form the whole tournament only losing 2 sets during all his matches. It was his 16th Grand Slam win.

Serena Williams beats Justine Henin at the Australian Open

A great women’s singles championship final saw apparently injured Serena Williams win her 12th Grand Slam win in Melbourne 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 over newly returned Justine Henin. Henin battled hard but didn’t have enough to stop Williams. It was Williams 5th Australian Open win. The win moved Williams up in all time wins with the likes of Chris Evert and Billie Jean King but well short of the 24 championships held by Margaret Court. Williams accepted the trophy from the 67 year old Women’s tennis legend Margaret Court and then went on applaud Billie Jean King as her mentor.

Henin had won four of their six previous meetings at the majors, including three straight quarterfinal victories in 2007. About the free swinging Henin, Williams said, “She took me to the umpteenth level,” “She clearly hasn’t lost a step at all since she’s been gone.”

Serena Williams Li Na Battle at Australian Open

In a very entertaining match, Serena Williams prevailed in the Australian Open womens singles semi final match today with Li Na. Na who was bungee jumping before the tournament played extremely well despite making a good number of unforced errors. Serena counted on her big serve to save her in this match though. Williams won a tight match 7-6, 7-6 despite some physical problems.

Roger Federer Ousts Nikolay Davydenko

Nikolay Davydenko came out flying against Roger Federer Wednesday in the Australian Open Tennis Championships. It was the quarter finals and Federer was leary of the match with the hard hitting and feisty speedster from Russia. When the dust settled, Federer won 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, 7-5. After losing the first set, Federer took a bathroom break and came back to win 3 straight sets. Serena Williams used the same tactic in her match against Victoria Azarenka where a washroom break threw off her opponent. Expect more washroom breaks in upcoming matches.

Tsonga Ousts Djokovic

It was another years of bad luck ofr Novak Djokovic 7-6(8), 6-7(5), 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 as he looked tired and washed out from illness and lost despite making a valiant effort. He was sick before the match and during a medical timeout. “Just a terrible feeling. It’s been a great tournament for me, so it’s just a bad way to not to be able physically go through the whole match.” Djokovic said in a post match interview. Even with the loss Djokovic moves up to 2nd in Mens rankings on the WTP rankings.

Week 2 begins at the Australian Open

Week 2 at the 2010 Australian Open sees Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko, Andy Roddick, and Andy Murray through to the Mens final 8. Roger Federer is about to play Aussie home favority Leyton Hewitt today.

On the womens side, Li Na, Venus Williams, Justine Henin, Maria Kirilenko, Nadia Petrova, have made it to the final 8 while Serena Williams is playing Aussie favorite Samantha Stosur.

Rafa takes out Lacko

Lukas Lacko had the misfortune of meeting top ranked Rafael Nadal today and found himself on the bad end of 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 score. The quick win is good news for Nadal who conserves some energy on his way to a match with either Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany and American Wayne Odesnik. Things are shaping up well for Rafa to make another final appearance at the Australian Mens Singles Final.

Henin Beats Dementieva to Move on

With Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin both having great success coming out of retirement, we might see more players coming back for a second shot. Clearly, these two women are having fun this time and playing surprising well. Alena Dementieva suffered the misfortune of being in the same part of the draw as Justine Henin and found herself back on her heels in a 7-5 7-6(6) loss to Henin.

Dementieva said “I think I just let her play that aggressively today. You know, I was not playing deep enough. So I just let her dictate the whole game. That’s not the way I was planning to go, you know, on the court,” said Dementieva. “I just think it’s really interesting to play against someone like her. She’s a great player. Playing against her, you really can learn a lot and improve your game.”

This Henin’s 8th appearance at the Australian Open and she won the ladies singles crown in 2004.
